Summary[]

Suits stars Gabriel Macht ("Love and Other Drugs") as Harvey Specter, one of Manhattan's top corporate lawyers, and Patrick J. Adams ("Lost") as Mike Ross, a brilliant but unmotivated college dropout.

Harvey sets out to recruit a new hotshot associate from a pool of Harvard graduates and hires the only guy that manages to impress him.

Mike has both book smarts and street smarts, but the legal prodigy never actually went to law school. In order to serve justice and save their jobs, both of these unconventional thinkers must keep up the charade that he did.

Development[]

Suits first appeared on USA Network's development slate under the title A Legal Mind in April 2010. In May, the network placed a cast-contingent pilot order from a pilot script written by Aaron Korsh. The pilot was filmed in New York City in the fall of 2010. The network gave a go ahead for the series with a 12-episode order on January 19, 2011. The series began filming in Toronto, Ontario on April 25, 2011, and completed August 12, 2011.

After a successful first season, the show was renewed for a second season on August 11, 2011 and began airing on June 14, 2012. On October 12, 2012, a third season was announced, and subsequently premiered on July 16, 2013. A fourth season was announced on October 24, 2013.[1]

On January 30, 2018, the series was renewed for an eighth season. The show was renewed for a 10-episode ninth and final season on January 23, 2019, which premiered on July 17, 2019.

Casting[]

In July 2010, the first actor was cast: Patrick J. Adams as Mike Ross. In late July, Gabriel Macht joined the cast as Harvey Specter. Rick Hoffman came on board in mid-August to portray Harvey's competition, Louis, at the law firm. Meghan Markle and Gina Torres soon joined the cast in late August, who were set to play Rachel Zane and Jessica Pearson respectively. Sarah Rafferty completed the main cast as Donna. Ahead of eighth season renewal, Adam, Torres and Markle are leaving the series after seven seasons, then Amanda Schull and Dulé Hill are promoted to series regulars, and Katherine Heigl joined the series.

Reception[]

Ginia Bellafante, a critic for the The New York Times, gave the pilot a positive review: "A new legal series beginning on Thursday on USA, erupts from a Mount Vesuvius of absurdities, and yet like so much else in the USA stable, it comes in relatively good faith — not merely with a snappy sense of its own fun, but also with a chipper belief in the viability of renewal." In a review in the The Miami Herald, Glenn Garvin referred to the show as "cuttingly funny." BuddyTV described Suits as "an excellent summer show and–more than that–a truly high-quality piece of television."

Spin-off[]

Pearson[]

In February 2017, USA began early talks for a potential Jessica Pearson spin-off. Gina Torres would star in and produce the spin-off. In August 2017, it was revealed that the season 7 finale of Suits would serve as a backdoor pilot to the potential Jessica Pearson spin-off series. On March 8, 2018, it was announced the Jessica Pearson spin-off was picked up to series. On January 17, 2019, it was announced the spin-off would be called Pearson, titled after the main star's character. On May 1, 2019, it was announced that the series would premiere on July 17, 2019. In October 2019, the series was canceled after one season.

Suits: L.A.[]

In October 2023, it was announced that Universal Television and NBCUniversal were developing an untitled Suits spin-off series, with Aaron Korsh as showrunner. The series was revealed to take place in Los Angeles in December 2023, and a pilot for the series, titled Suits: L.A., was ordered by NBC in February 2024.
